The Common Wealth of Nations was constituted in December 1931. It is an intergovernmental organization, an association of 54 independent states (one of the member nations, Fiji, is suspended) which were previously under the British Empire. Even though the head of the organization is ‘the Queen of Briton’ (now Queen Elizabeth II), the activities are managed by the Common Wealth Secretary General and the Secretariat. Normally two meetings are conducted in a year between the Common Wealth Government and the Common Wealth Games Federation. Every year ‘Common Wealth Day’ is celebrated by the members, on the second Monday in March.
Common Wealth Foundation is conducting a number of events to promote democracy, good governance, law, human rights, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism, and world peace among the member nations. An important event of this kind is Common Wealth Games. The Common Wealth Games is organized once in 4 years. Last time it was held at Melbourne, Australia in the year 2006. In 2010, it is going to be held in New Delhi, India. This multi sports event attracts world champion athletes and other sports personalities to one platform.
Common Wealth Games 2010
Common Wealth Games 2010 is scheduled to be held in New Delhi between 3 October and 14 October. This is the second time that Common Wealth Games is conducted in an Asian country after it was conducted in Malaysia in the year 1998. The event is the largest such multi-sports event ever conducted in the India. Key stakeholders responsible for the successful delivery of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi include the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Indian Olympics Association (IOA), Organizing Committee (OC), Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), and Government of India (GOI).
The total budget estimated for hosting the event is US$ 1.6 billion. The amount excludes funds related to infrastructural development. Considering the extent of modifications and developments needed for the city, it is estimated the 2010 Commonwealth Games is going to be the most expensive Commonwealth Games ever. The total budget for the previous games held in Melbourne 2006 was approximately US$ 1.1 billion.
How Delhi has prepared for the Games
It is an honor to all Indians that New Delhi is selected as the venue for 19th Common Wealth Game 2010. India, however, has to face a lot of struggle to conduct this event in a smooth manner.
The Government of India has constructed a game village near the river Yamuna. It is spread to nearly 635 hectares. Around 30,000 trained volunteers have been prepared to receive the athletes and their officials. They are also assisting the Organization Committee of Common Wealth Games to meet the requirements of athletes such as food, accommodation, guideline of the competition venues, etc. The state government has arranged 23 competition venues and 32 training venues, all of which are built up with international standard.
The Delhi Transport Corporation has introduced new luxury buses to Metro stations from feeder routes; this will enhance the connectivity and passenger capacity. The construction of an underground link road from Ring Road to Lodhi Road has made it easier for travelers to reach Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from the Game village. In additions to the 26 flyovers and 24 underground roads; the newly built Delhi-Gurgaon 8-line express way and the Noida – Delhi Flyway can overcome the traffic jams and could control the crowds easily. Another metro line, which is constructed between airport and Connaught place, will connect the main competition venues Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Indira Gandhi Stadium, and may help people save traveling time.
Another important challenge for the New Delhi Government is to meet the accommodation facilities for the athletes. There are around 8000 athletes and their officials participating in the mega event, in addition to the large number of visitors expected to watch the mega event. To accommodate these people the Organization Committee has taken a number of steps. The committee has arranged around 40,000 hotel rooms and adopted a new scheme called ‘Bed & Breakfast,’ which would allow visitors to stay individuals’ homes as guests.
Common Wealth Organizing Committee has also arranged a vast Medical Program for athletes, officials and whole games family.
Duration and Date of Commonwealth Games
The opening ceremony will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on 3rd October and the closing ceremony will be conducted at the same place on 14th October. Kabaddi, the homegrown game, will be a demonstration sport during the event.
